Brief memoir, 1915, [and transcription, 2003], re life in vicinity of Lancaster, S.C., during the Civil War, including memories of her aunt, Mrs. R.L. Crawford, managing plantation operations while her husband was in Confederate military service and arrival of Union troops in 1865. Lancaster and Chester Districts of S.C. were seen as safe destinations for refugees from the coastal areas, although Witherspoon reports on arrival of Federal troops under the command of Gen. Judson Kilpatrick; Union forces arrived 23 Feb. 1865, and occupied the town for 6 days; includes anecdote re a Union officer, Capt. Griffin, whose wife lodged in the Witherspoon home; the arrival of Confederate forces led by Gen. Joseph Wheeler, and expressing "no unkind feeling" for the Union troops.

Hugh Judson Kilpatrick, more commonly referred to as Judson Kilpatrick, the fourth child of Colonel Simon Kilpatrick and Julia Wickham, was born on the family farm in Wantage Township, near Deckertown, New Jersey (now Sussex Borough).
